ON THE ROAD PART VI: SUN STUDIO

This was an improvised stop, not quite as improvised as Groom Cemetery, I knew this place existed, but let's face it, my main stop and attraction in Memphis was hands down Graceland (but more on that pilgrimage later on this week). We had managed to get there pretty quickly, whizzing through Arkansas from Tulsa, moving from the dust of the midwest, to neons of the city, and to me the beginning of 'The South'.

Once the fog from being in Elvis town cleared, I remembered that Memphis was also the birthplace of rock'n'roll (OMG lightbulb!) and that I had heard and known about Sun Studio for years, but I guess I always assumed the building would be a skeleton of how it was when Sam was running it, and some lame museum was put in its place, one that doesn't even begin to cover the history and soul of the place (sorry Lubbock). Well, I was surprisingly and pleasantly mistaken. I'm not gonna say I felt like Johnny Cash or Howlin' Wolf were recording there just the day before, but I suppose it's as close as I'm gonna get to it, and it was well worth it.
